How to Use the Surface Test Correctly – Step by Step

If you suspect mould on a surface in your home, our surface test is a quick and easy way to get an indication of whether there is microbial growth on surfaces such as walls, ceilings, grout or furniture.

To ensure a correct and reliable result, it’s important to follow the test properly. Below we walk you through the entire process – step by step – and explain how to interpret your result.

What Is a Surface Test?

A surface test is used to detect mould and other microbial growth directly on a specific surface. Unlike an air test, it does not measure spores in the air but focuses on visible or suspected problem areas.

Typical uses for a surface test:

  • Visible discolouration

  • Suspected mould behind furniture

  • Bathroom or basement walls

  • Window frames, ceilings or cold external walls

Before You Start – Important to Know

  • Keep the test refrigerated until you’re ready to use it.

  • Avoid touching the test swab tip with your fingers.

  • Use only one test per surface.

  • Read the result within 10 minutes to avoid false positives.

How to Perform the Test – Step by Step

Step 1: Choose Your Test Area
Select the surface where you suspect mould growth. This could be an area you can see or somewhere that often stays damp.

Step 2: Take the Test Out of the Pack
Carefully open the test and remove the swab without touching the tip.

Step 3: Collect the Sample
Gently rub the swab across the surface with light pressure, ensuring good contact without damaging the material.

Step 4: Close the Test
Place the swab back into the tube and securely close it.

Step 5: Read the Result
Check your result within 10 minutes of sampling. Results may become unreliable if left longer.

How to Interpret Your Result

The colour on the test indicates the level of microbial presence:

  • Green – No detectable mould

  • Grey – Inconclusive, retest recommended

  • Purple – Light presence

  • Dark Purple – Heavy presence

The darker the colour, the stronger the indication of microbial growth.

What to Do If the Test Is Positive

A positive result means there is current or past growth on that surface. This could be caused by:

  • Moisture problems

  • Cold spots

  • Poor ventilation

  • Previous water damage

For mild presence, thorough cleaning and improved ventilation may help. For heavy presence, we recommend speaking to a professional for further assessment and possibly performing an air quality test.

Disposal of the Test

Once used, the test can be disposed of with your household waste.
