Mold and indoor climate: How to improve air quality
A healthy indoor climate is crucial for both well-being and the prevention of mold. Poor air quality and high humidity can create optimal conditions for mold, which can negatively affect both the building and your health. Here are the most important tips for improving air quality and reducing the risk of mold in your home or workplace.
1. Ensure good ventilation
Regular ventilation is one of the most effective ways to improve indoor air quality.
- Air out 2-3 times a day for 5-10 minutes with a thorough draft.
- Use a ventilation system or extractor hood in the kitchen and a fan in the bathroom.
2. Keep humidity under control
Mold thrives in high humidity.
- Keep the humidity below 60% – preferably around 40-50%.
- Use a hygrometer to measure humidity.
- Avoid drying clothes indoors if possible.
3. Avoid cold bridges and damp areas
Thermal bridges and poorly insulated areas can cause condensation and moisture problems.
- Insulate exposed walls and ceilings.
- Make sure that furniture is not placed directly against cold exterior walls.
4. Repair water damage quickly
Leaks and water damage should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid moisture accumulation and mold growth.
5. Clean and maintain regularly
Dust and dirt can contribute to a poor indoor climate and create a breeding ground for mold.
- Clean regularly, especially in damp rooms and hidden corners.
Prevention and monitoring
- Consider installing sensors to monitor humidity and temperature.
- If you suspect mold, it is recommended to use a home test or have a professional analysis performed.
